Abstract:
The dialect of Icari is mainly spoken in the village of Icari in the
Daghestan Republic (Russia). Icari is a separate dialect of the Dargwa
language spoken by about 2,000 people.
Generally, the grammar of Icari is typical for the South Daghestan. It
is characterized by ergative clause structure focus marking, complex
verbal system containing a number of synthetic and periphrastic forms
of aspect/tense/evidentiality, class system of the noun with a long
list of locative cases. Icari differs from the standard Dargwa in
certain respects, for example in the consonant system, predicate
structure, etc.
Rasul O. Matulov is Senior Lecturer at the Daghestan State University
(Makhachkala). He teaches Linguistics and the Dargwa language. His
Ph.D. these is the only considerable work dealing with the Icari
dialect. NINA R. SUMBATOVA is a researcher at the Institute of the
Oriental Studies primarily interested in typology of verbal
systems. She also made fieldwork on Icari as well as some other
languages of Daghestan. (see also the LINCOM webshop: lincom.at)
