We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: Tapes for DAT
I would like to know if anyone has experience using the DDS (computer)
tapes in recording fieldwork with a dat and whether the quality of the
signal is significantly different from the pro audio dat tapes (since
the price is). I will post a summary if there are enough responses.
Thanks!

Dear Colleagues,
I have found in literature lots of example sentences with Agent
subjects in which VPs are preposed as in (1).
(1) Ralph says that he will clean his room meticulously this
Sunday, and [clean his room meticulously this Sunday] he
will.
But I could not find VP-Preposing sentences with Cause(r) subjects. My
question is: Are the following sentences as grammatical as (1)?
(2) Mary said that her criticisms would harm John, and [harm
John/him] they did.
(3) Mary said that Sue's remarks would arouse them to action
in difficult situations, and [arouse them to action in
dificut situations] they did.
(4) Mary said that Lipson's textbook would teach Russian to
them during their sabbaticals, and [teach Russian to them
during their sabbaticals] it did.
Thank you in advance for your help.
B.-C. Lee
