Meeting Description:

The 14th World Congress of Applied Linguistics hosted by the American
Association for Applied Linguistics will be held July 24 to 29, 2005
in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Proposals for presentations related to policy, research, and theory
are invited in any area of applied linguistics. Proposals may be for
individual papers, posters, or symposia.  Proposals will be accepted
from March 1 through June 1, 2004.  Integrating language and content:
empirical perspectives on CLIL (AILA 2005 Symposium)

Convenors: Christiane Dalton-Puffer (Vienna,Austria)
           Tarja Nikula (Jyväskylä, Finland)

This symposium at the AILA 2005 Congress intends to bring together
researchers who are investigating characteristics of language produced
in CLIL classrooms.  The points of interest may be located at any
level of linguistic organization: phonological, lexicogrammatical,
pragmatic, discoursal/textual. The purpose is to invite reflection,
share experiences and identify areas for future research and
development grounded on empirical observations on what happens in CLIL
classrooms.

The symposium will be concerned with issues and questions such as the
following:
* What are the characteristics of CLIL classroom discourse? Are these
similar/different across contexts (linguistic, institutional,
cultural)?
* In what ways is CLIL classroom language different from (or the same
as) FL classes and/or L1 content classes?
* When CLIL happens in foreign language environments, what are the
influences of the surrounding L1 culture on the CLIL classroom
community?
* What is the role of L1 and the nature of language contact in CLIL
settings?

Individual contributions will present research on CLIL classrooms with
a clear focus on language issues and should consider the implications
of research results for further development of CLIL.

Due to the time restrictions for AILA symposia, we will only be able
to accept 5-6 papers for the panel itself. However, we are also
looking into the possibilities of publishing a collection of articles
on empirical CLIL research. We therefore invite you to send us your
proposal even if you are not planning to attend AILA but are working
in this field.

The ALAK calls for presentations (20-minute talk and 10-minute
discussion) in all areas of applied linguistics. The title of your
presentation should be e-mailed to the conference chair by April 26,
2004. When submitting your presentation title, please include the
following information: name, affiliation, mailing address, phone
numbers, and e-mail address.

All presenters are asked to submit a 5-6 page manuscript written in
English with biographical data for the conference proceedings by
September 10, 2004. A style sheet for the manuscript will be provided
later.
