Cherokee Studies seeks a linguist to co-ordinate Cherokee language
revitalization efforts at Western Carolina University in ways that will best
meet the needs of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). Ph.D. in
Linguistics or Anthropological linguistics preferred with an interest and
expertise in Native American language revitalization.
Duties include working with several entities including Cherokee Studies and
Modern Foreign Languages at Western Carolina University, Tsalagi Aniwoni of the
EBCI, and partnering with other institutions such as the Museum of the Cherokee
Indian, the Cherokee Nation, and Northeastern State University; providing
linguistic expertise to assist Cherokee language speakers to develop effective
Cherokee language instruction methods and course materials; and providing
assistance to native speakers in course development and teaching of Cherokee
language courses at Western Carolina University.
Desire someone with good communication, interpersonal skills, and sensitivity to
the needs of Native American communities, knowledge of language immersion
techniques, and the capability of writing grants to fund future language
revitalization efforts. The position is grant funded.
Starting date: January 2005 or as soon as possible. Applicants should send a
