Abstract:
This is the second edition of An Introduction to Systemic Functional
Linguistics first published in 1994.
The book offers a comprehensive overview of systemic theory and
demonstrates how systemic techniques can be applied in the analysis of
texts. Written for students who have little or no formal knowledge of
linguistics, it covers the major concepts in systemic linguistics including
semiotic systems, genre, register, text, cohesion and grammatical metaphor.
Using the influential work of M. A. K. Halliday as a foundation, the book
also presents a functional grammatical description of the simultaneous
metafunctional organisation of the clause; its Mood, Transitivity, Theme
and Clause Complex systems. The basic techniques for analysing cohesive
patterns in text, such as reference, lexical cohesion and conjunction, are
also introduced.
The new edition has been fully updated and includes two new chapters on
clause systems and the analysis of what constitutes a text. The new edition
has also been enlarged and has improved chapter breakdowns to help
students to navigate the book. Lists of texts, systems, figures and tables
have also been added, to enable the reader to access examples easily. This
comprehensive book is an invaluable resource for students who are new to
systemic functional linguistics.
