Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce the first International Conference on
Historical News Discourse (CHINED), to be held in Florence, Italy, 2-3
September 2004. We invite contributions dealing with news discourse
from the Early Modern English Period (c. 1500-1800). News discourse
will be understood in its widest sense as belonging to the sphere of
public discourse, thus including a variety of speech situations
(political speeches, proclamations, announcements, orders, etc.), as
well as referring to the more specific text genres traditionally
associated with the domain of news, such as ballads, pamphlets,
newspapers, magazines, correspondence, histories, annals,
etc. Conference on Historical News Discourse (CHINED) Florence, Italy,

** SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS **

The focus of the conference will be on:

- Methodologies in collecting and analysing linguistic data from the
above areas, both quantitative and qualitative, diachronic and
synchronic;
- Sociolinguistic, pragmatic factors and the study of early news
discourse;
- Domains of language change (lexical, syntactic, textual); situations
motivating language change (e.g. language contact, translations,
etc.);
- Comparison of different text types; study of one specific text type.

2004 BIDE (Bilbao-Deusto) Student Conference in Linguistics

First Call For Papers

Keynote Speaker:  Juan Uriagereka, University of Maryland

We are pleased to announce the 2004 BIDE (Bilbao-Deusto) Student
Conference in Linguistics. The aim of BIDE is to serve as rendezvous
for new generations of academics from all areas of linguistic
research. BIDE provides students a welcoming atmosphere where they can
present their own work and get feedback from peers as well as senior
researchers.

Abstracts are due on or before April 15, 2004. Your proposal should
describe original, unpublished work that may be in progress. Authors
are limited to maximum of one individual and one joint submission
(papers co-authored with faculty will not be accepted). Send your
abstract as a PDF or WORD file to bide04 at fil.deusto.es with "abstract
submission" in the subject field. The abstract should be anonymous and
abide by the following specifications: do not exceed two pages
(examples and references included); use 1 inch (2.54 cms) margins on
all sides; and a 12 point size font (preferably Times New
Roman). Include your name(s), title of the paper, affiliation(s) and
contact information in the email body and indicate what area of
linguistics your contribution fits in best, e.g. morphology,
phonetics-phonology, semantics, syntax and so on.

Notification of acceptance can be expected around the first week of
May. Accepted papers are allowed 20 minutes for presentation and 10
minutes for discussion.

The papers presented at BIDE-04 are eligible for publication in the
International Journal of Basque Linguistics. The deadline for
submitting papers will be announced at the conference.
