Description:

R&A Grade 1A:  £18,268 -   £27,339 p.a.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic graduates to take part in a
new and innovative enterprise to create Voice Technology Resources for
Welsh and Irish. This is a joint project with Trinity College, Dublin,
with additional input from University College Dublin and Dublin City
University, and can entail some international travel.

The project officer, who will be based in the e-Welsh Unit at Canolfan
Bedwyr, University of Wales, Bangor, will: assist with the collection
and development of Welsh oral corpora; annotate oral corpora to
standards developed for the project; take part in training events and
workshops with voluntary bodies and small software companies; and also
assist with developing text applications to voice for the project.

The appointee will have a first class or upper second class honours
degree in Welsh, Linguistics or a similar subject and will have an
interest in voice technology and language technology, or a degree in
Computer Science with a strong interest in phonetics/language
technology.  He/she will be fluent in Welsh, ideally with a thorough
knowledge of Welsh phonetics and good transcription skills.  A
knowledge of Irish would also be an advantage, and an interest in
voice technology and/or computer linguistics in the Celtic
languages. Consideration will also be given to candidates with degrees
in other subjects who have the necessary skills and who wish to
develop a long term career in Celtic language technology or computer
linguistics.

The appointee will commence in the post as soon as possible and
continue in post until the end of 2005.

The scheme is jointly funded by the EU INTERREG IIIA Community
Enterprise Programme and the Welsh Language Board.
