LEARN LATIN THIS SUMMER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA!

- 2 years of college-level Latin in just 9 weeks
- No previous knowledge of Latin necessary
- 12 University of Virginia credit hours or no-credit option
- Housing available in the Monroe Language House

The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia (UVa) will
offer Latin as one of the University's eight Summer Language
Institutes. The Latin Institute will run from June 14 to August 13; it
is a highly intensive program that will prepare diligent students to
read at an intermediate to advanced college level after successful
completion of the nine-week program.  No previous knowledge of Latin
is required.

The Institute begins with the fundamentals of Latin grammar, including
elementary readings and composition. Thereafter students read
extensively from prose and verse authors at the intermediate level, in
addition to completing more advanced exercises in prose composition
and metrics. A dedicated faculty of five instructors provides six
hours of formal instruction each day and supplementary tutoring
sessions each evening.

Many participants in previous sessions of the Latin Institute have
benefited greatly from this experience. In the past we have hosted
undergraduates from numerous institutions in the U.S. and abroad who
have applied credit earned at the Institute toward degrees in Classics
and other related disciplines.  Many graduate students from various
fields, including History, Religious Studies, Art History, Philosophy,
Medieval Studies, Romance Languages, and English, have completed our
intensive program and continue to use Latin to further their
educational and research objectives.

The deadline for applications is April 15, 2004. Students can earn 12
credit hours through UVa, or they may choose a non-credit option,
which reduces the tuition for graduate students and non-Virginia
