The Third Call for the Journal of Universal Language(5:2)

Honorarium:
As a token of our gratitude, the contributors will be awarded the
$1,000 honorarium (which is subject to taxation).

Topic Areas:

The Journal of Universal Language is concerned with:
-artificial language, communication & culture in language usage,
typology, and universality in language
-interdisciplinary contributions written with applied linguists in
mind
-brief notes, comments or observation concerning official language
-reaction/replies to recent papers

The editors encourage the submission of papers on proposed themes as
well as on other topics relevant to the interest of the Journal of
Universal Language. Each volume contains two issues, published in
March and September. The language of publication is English.

Format:
1. The length of a manuscript should not exceed 40 pages.
2. A 200-word abstract and keywords should be given at the beginning
of each manuscript.
3. Manuscripts should be submitted on A4 paper, with the margins at
least 4cm on all four sides of each sheet. They may be single-spaced
and/or double-sided if desired.

Important Dates:
Submission deadline: August 1, 2004.
(However, we accept manuscripts throughout the year.)
Notification of acceptance: August 15, 2004
Submission of camera-ready papers: September 1, 2004

1. Electronic submissions are acceptable. Acceptable file formats are
Portable Document Format (.pdf) and MS Word (.doc). Please send your
file in an attachment to jytak at sejong.ac.kr.
2. For hard copy submissions, please send 3 copies, accompanied by a

Meeting Description:

The notion of Academic Discourse has been under debate for a
considerable length of time. Some scholars suggest academic discourse
is a genre of its own while others maintain that it is a domain-based
/ discipline-bound phenomenon.

Most work done on academic discourse concerns either English as a
lingua franca or less widely used languages in contrast to
English. More research concerning the Romance languages, especially
Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, not to mention other less used
languages, is definitely needed.  Furthermore, relatively few
researchers have been interested in comparing academic discourse
practices and traditions across disciplines and languages.  A further
issue largely debated in the European context is the impact of the
emergent European research area and the relevance it bears to the
structuring of argumentation of academic discourse. In this discussion
language policy aspects are also strongly represented.

The aim of the conference is to provide a multidisciplinary forum for
discussing theoretical issues and innovative methodological approaches
in order to stimulate the on-going debate in this field.

1st  Call for Papers:

Conference themes:

Presentations on the following topics on either spoken or written
academic discourse are particularly welcome.  Propositions casting
outside the conventional notion of academic discourse, such as
critical analysis of administrative intra-and inter-discursive
practices at the universities, are also welcomed,

* The validity of the concept Academic Discourse:
* Genre-related linguistic issues
* Cross-cultural and cross-linguistic dimensions of Academic Discourse
(e.g. the question of (cultural) identity, rhetorical traditions and
argumentation
* Popularisation and translation of scientific discourse
* The impact of new technologies and media on academic discourse
* Questions related to the importance of cultural identities and
language planning

The official languages of the conference are English and French;
presentations in Italian and Spanish are also accepted.
