The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.
This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Brighton
Department: Information Technology Research Institute
Rank of Job: Manager
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics, Multilinguality, natural
language generation
Description:
We are seeking a Research Fellow to work with us on EPOCH, a Network
of Excellence under European Framework 6, which addresses the need to
improve the quality and effectiveness of the use of IT for Cultural
Heritage. The role of the Research Fellow will, in the first instance,
be to develop a showcase system in this area. If this work is
successful, then further research opportunities are envisaged.
ITRI's role in this project focuses on the thesis that to be optimally
useful, presentations of information related to Cultural Heritage
(e.g., museums) should include spoken and/or written information in
several natural languages, and that it is often advantageous to
generate such presentations automatically, rather than storing them in
advance. The post-holder will help us make the case for multilingual
Natural Language Generation (MNLG) in the domain of Cultural Heritage
by building a showcase. Since a first version of the showcase should
be finished by the beginning of December, we expect it to combine
existing systems or mock-ups, using technical shortcuts where
necessary; it will make liberal use of graphics (including animated
agents) to show how MNLG can function in a multimodal setting.
Later versions will explore deeper techniques for multilingual
generation and multimodality.
The ideal candidate for this work would combine technical abilities
(in language engineering, speech, and/or multimodality) with an eye
for both education and entertainment. The work would take place in a
setting where there is ample expertise in natural language generation,
cultural heritage, and graphics.
Essential:
- excellent programming skills
- experience of building NLG systems, multimodal information
presentation systems, or computer games
Desirable:
- experience with programming in C++
- experience with multilinguality
- experience with cultural heritage
Duration of Post: 1 year in the first instance.
Salary: £22,954 - £28,621pa
