The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.
This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Rank of Job: Computational LInguist
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics, Discourse Analysis,
Semantics, Text/Corpus Linguistics
Description:
Applied Linguistics LLC, a small, high-energy start-up on the sunny
West Coast of Central Florida, U.S.A., is seeking a bright,
computational linguist with interest in the application of semantics
to information retrieval and related NLU functions. This individual
will take on key responsibility for testing and helping to perfect a
new-generation, thesaurus-based IR application. Other long-term
development areas include data mining, document abstracting, machine
translation.
The candidate should posses the following qualifications:
1 -- a degee in computational linguistics, or the equivalent in
professional experience.
2 -- interest in a thesaurus-based approach to IR and other NLU
applications.
3 -- skill in developing, testing and refining algorithms for
semantics-based applications.
4 -- experience with use of statistics in NLP. Specifically,
experience with latent semantic indexing would be a definite
plus. So also with automatic thesaurus generation.
5 -- some experience with programming languages (Java, C, C++ are
especially desirable)
We are not looking for a systems engineer here so much as a skilled,
computationally oriented linguistic who can conceive, specify, and
improve algorithms in the NLU field. More immediately, we are looking
for someone to work on a search engine prototype currently under
development that shows promise of moving information retrieval beyond
the keyword level.
For the right individual there is opportunity for rapid advance to a
senior position of responsibility.
Applied Linguistics is located in Palm Harbor on the summy West Coast
of Central Florida. We are small, smooth-working, energetic team,
less than a year old, well-financed, and about to triple our size. A
search engine prototype has been developed and tested that shows
considerable promise. But, as in all prototypes, much still needs to
be done, in all areas: part-of-speech resolution, semantic
disambiguation, semantic profiling, similarity measurements between
documents for ranking purposes, and so on.
We believe ourselves to be the path to an important breakthrough in IR
technology. Come join us
