Description:

Context
For the past ten years, the Centre for Language and Communication
Studies has been running extracurricular evening language modules for
several languages, based on the concept of learner autonomy and
incorporating the centre's expertise in the use of new technologies in
language teaching. Recently, the introduction of a Broad Curriculum
policy in Trinity College Dublin means that more and more students can
study extracurricular courses either as a replacement for courses
within their main subject area, or receive a bonus percentage which is
added to their end-of-year mark.  From the coming academic year on, we
will introduce Irish for non-beginners courses. Learners in these
courses will have the equivalent of an Irish Leaving Certificate
standard of Irish.

Job description
The applicant will:
- teach three extracurricular evening language courses a week in Irish
for non-beginners (2 hours each)
- explore new approaches to Irish language teaching, particularly
those involving new technologies.
- register for a PhD degree with the Centre for Language and
Communication Studies, Trinity College Dublin, in the area of
pedagogical applications of technology to the teaching of Irish,
focussing on applications in speech technology which harness ongoing
research at CLCS.

Person specification
The person appointed should have a good undergraduate degree or
equivalent qualification. He/she should have a native or
near-native-speaker command of Irish. It is essential that the
applicant has a strong interest in exploring and implementing new
approaches to Irish language teaching and the use of new technologies
in this context.

The person appointed will enjoy working as part of a team and must
have good communication skills with both students and colleagues in an
international environment. He/she is expected to be motivated and to
develop a capacity for independent working. The person appointed will
receive appropriate support, both in teaching and research, by the
CLCS as well as the Departments of Irish and Education.

Starting date
The person appointed will start work on 1 September and continue for
three years.
