Meeting Description:

The Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) at
the University of Tromsoe, Norway, is pleased to host the 13th annual
Conference of the Student Organization of Linguistics in Europe, 2-4
December 2004.

ConSOLE, organised by a different European university every year,
provides a forum for students of linguistics from all over the world
to present independent research.

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

Abstracts are invited from all areas of theoretical linguistics
including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and language
acquisition. Submissions from other areas of linguistics will also be
considered provided that the theoretical significance of the paper is
clearly demonstrated in the abstract.

ConSOLE XIII will feature a special session on I-Phonology. We invite
papers discussing topics including but not limited to the nature of
phonological primes, the role of contrast in phonological systems, the
division of labour between representation and derivation/constraint
evaluation, the status of phonetic grounding in phonological theory,
and the relation between phonology and higher linguistic levels.

 Accepted papers are allotted 30 minutes for presentation plus 10
minutes for discussion. For detailed submission guidelines, visit

Notification of acceptance: 15th September.

About Tromso

The conference will take place in the world's northernmost university
town, situated far above the Arctic Circle. Thanks to the Gulf Stream,
however, winter temperatures are usually between +5 and -5 C. The town
is famous for its spectacular Northern Lights and lively party scene,
and offers great opportunities for downhill and cross-country
skiing. Moreover, as the sun in Tromso sets in late November and does
not come up until late January, participants will also be able to
experience a bite-sized version of polar night!


Financial support

As is customary for ConSOLE, accommodation will be provided (free) for
4 nights for those presenting at the conference. Given Tromso's remote
location, ConSOLE XIII offers travel support for presenters without
sufficient funds, to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Presenters
will also be exempt form any conference fees.

The Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics
(GURT 2005) announces its call for papers for the 2005 conference,
taking placing on the campus of Georgetown University, Washington, DC,
March 10-13, 2005.

including plenary speakers and invited symposia, and the submissions
process.

This year's theme is ''Educating for advanced foreign language
capacities: Constructs, curriculum, instruction, assessment.''  The
conference will focus on all aspects of instructed foreign language
learning to advanced levels.

Proposals are due October 1, 2004.  Proposal acceptance notification:
December 1, 2004.

Presentation formats include:
- Colloquia: Scheduled for three-hour blocks.
- Individual papers: Scheduled for half-hour blocks
- Poster presentations: Scheduled for two-hour blocks
- Pre-conference workshops: (all day Thursday), half day and full day

The conference is organized around the following strands:
- theories of language for learning and teaching a foreign language to
advanced levels
- curriculum construction in support of advanced foreign language
acquisition
- instructional approaches that aim to develop advanced-level foreign
language capacities, from the standpoint of the learner and the
teacher;
- assessment of advanced foreign language abilities, both within a
programmatic environment and outside of it.

We especially welcome proposals for presentations in these areas,
including heritage language learning and learning less commonly taught
languages. A prize will be awarded to the best student paper proposal.
