We herewith invite you to the next conference of the German
Association of Applied Linguistics (GAL) which is being organised by
the University of Wuppertal. We particularly invite you to take part
in the Section ''Sociolinguistics'' planned for the 24th of
September. Abstracts should be send using the forms available on the
homepage of the conference (see above) not later than the 16th of
April 2004. The Section for Sociolinguistics focuses on speech and
language(s) in social contexts. The section has a special interest in
those social and cultural frameworks which affect the use of language,
it investigates, however also the linguistic-symbolic dimensions of
society. Applied aspects of such questions are of particular interest.

The main topic of this year`s Section for Sociolinguistics will be the
functional use of multilingualism in social spaces. ''Space'' can be
understood, first of all, in concrete terms, i.e. referring to
countries, cities, districts, or the workplace, secondly ''space'' can
mean ''digital space'', i.e. text messaging, chatrooms, or the
world-wide-web.

The focus will be on the employment of multilingual resources and on
language practices which draw simultaneously upon various national or
regional languages and / or dialects. Domains of conceptual orality
and literacy are of equal interest. Questions of motivation, function,
meaning and symbolism should be addressed.

 The following themes could be the subject of proposals:

* Regions / Cities / centres with multilingual traditions
* Multilinguality in the WWW / the multilingual character of WWW-sites
* Multilingualism and (Online-) Marketing
* Changes in linguistic situations, the development of new language
practices and varieties in rural and urban environments as a result of
migratory processes in society.
* The (growing) function of minority languages and dialects in
identity formation against the background of the erosion of national
identity patterns.
* The rise of creole languages, mixed languages and hybrid varieties
as an expression of the discovery of identity and / or emancipation
* Individual linguistic biographies and marginalised speakers
histories
* The analysis of plurilingual contexts

The treatment of such themes from a gendered perspective will be
particularly welcome.

Contributions on other sociolinguistic topics will of course be
equally considered.

Contributions on Engledeutsch, Eurospeak, Spanglish, Danglish or
Franglais, however, which approach linguistic practices from the
perspective of monolingualism, will not be considered for inclusion in
the program.

Meeting Description:

The conference is organized jointly with the Second International
Symposium on Linguistic Politeness and wants to promote discussion and
collaboration among linguists and social scientists interested in
issues of gender and politeness in relation to language and discourse
in a variety of models and applications. The conference serves as a
forum for promoting discussion and collaboration among linguists and
social scientists interested in issues of gender and politeness in
relation to language and discourse in a variety of models and
applications. The joint conference has the title International
Conference on Language, Politeness, and Gender: The Pragmatic Roots.

We invite 2-page abstracts of original research on any aspect relevant
to the theme of the conference.  Plenary speakers include Robin
Lakoff, Susan Herring, Yoshiko Matsumoto, Tove Bull, Arja
Piirainen-Marsh.  Final deadline for abstracts: April 2, 2004. Please
submit your abstract electronically to clpg-2004 at helsinki.fi Abstracts
will be refereed; authors will be notified of acceptance by April 19,
