Dear Subscribers,
To those who have donated to this year's fund drive, already we have
raised a very respectable sum--over $12,000.00! All of us here at
LINGUIST thank you very much for your support!
To those of you who have not yet donated, this sum, however handsome,
represents just one-fifth of the amount needed to keep the LINGUIST
List running smoothly for another year. This means that, if we stopped
the fund drive now, we could only fund one-fifth of our current crew!
(Please see: http://www.linguistlist.org/crew2004.html )
Let's consider for a moment what the LINGUIST List would be like with
only one-fifth of our current crew...
Imagine:
- Instead of posting fifteen topics daily, we could post maybe three.
That would mean that instead of posting Alls (misc issues), Books,
Calls, Conferences, Discussions, Dissertation Abstracts, FYIs, Jobs,
Media issues, Qs and Summaries, Reviews, Journal Tables of Contents,
Support issues, and Software issues, we could only post, say, Books,
Discussions, and Support or, maybe, Jobs, TOCs, and FYIs.
- Alternatively, instead of the "48-hour rule", we'd have the "240-hour
rule".
That would mean that instead of promising to post all of our
messages within 48 hours of receiving them, we could only promise to
post them within 10 days of receiving them!
Given the same volume of messages we receive currently, we would get
further and further behind to the point that the issues we offered
would become stale and out-of-date!
I know that LINGUIST List's subscribers value, and enjoy, all of our
postings. Please donate and help keep LINGUIST List running!
So far, your donations have provided enough for us to fund only three
of our crew members--Gayathri Sriram, Michael Appleby, and Steve
Moran! (Please see http://www.linguistlist.org/crew2004.html )
Over the next three days, I will post each of their personal letters;
check back to read about each one of these crew members and all of the
varied and interesting things they do here at LINGUIST. Then, check
back throughout fund drive to read about all of our other crew members
as the rest of the letters are posted. The student editors are the
life of LINGUIST and we need your support!

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
