UiL OTS is looking for ambitious and enthusiastic candidates for
2 graduate positions
(vacancy No. 68411)

These positions, which are open per October 1, 2004, are available for
the project The Noun Phrase: Diversity in Dutch Design and the Design
of Diversity, funded by NWO. The overall aim of this research project
is to contribute to our understanding of the phenomenon of syntactic
diversity and the way it is encoded, its design, in human language.

Candidates are invited to to submit an original research proposal that
relates to one of the 3 sub-projects in the description. Research
proposals should contain an overview of recent literature on which the
proposed research is based, an articulate research question and a
proposed method for answering it.

The graduate position offers a two-year track towards a Ph.D. thesis,
to be extended to a maximum of 4 years after positive evaluation. As
part of their training, students attend graduate courses organised by
LOT.

We are looking for ambitious candidates who show enthusiasm for
scientific research and who are willing to work in a team. Eligible
candidates for the graduate positions must possess a pre-doctoral
academic degree (MA) in linguistics. In addition, the following is
asked for this project: theoretical knowledge of Dutch (morpho)syntax
(preferably also in the area of Dutch dialects and/or older variants),
advanced knowledge of generative syntax, interest in grammatical
variation, affinity with or interest in data-collection (e.g. through
questionnaires/field work). Candidates expecting to graduate before
October 2004 can also apply.

We offer an appointment for two years as a research assistant (to be
extended to a maximum of four years after positive assessment), within
a stimulating and innovative environment with many international
contacts with a Ph.D. programme that offers the opportunity of
advanced education in a broad area of linguistics, state-of-the-art
experimental and computer facilities, and excellent opportunities for
attending conferences. The salary will be in the range of EUR 1813
increasing to EUR 2282 in the fourth year (before taxes, full-time).

of employment) for Dutch universities.
