Subject:  Eighteenth-century English linguistics

Dear historical linguists,

I am currently working on eighteenth-century grammarians and their
possible influence on the development of the English subjunctive
mood. To this purpose, I am carrying out a survey to find out who is
considered the most influential grammarian during the 'age of
prescriptivism'. I would therefore like to appeal to other linguists
working on the eighteenth century to nominate who you think is 'the
most influential grammarian' and why you chose this particular
grammarian (i.e. depending on your particular research interest).
