Abstract:
The study of nominals, linguistic expressions whose core constituent
is characteristically a noun, is of great interest to both theoretical
and computational linguists. The author provides a detailed
description and formal analysis of a wide range of intricate
linguistic phenomena concerning nominal constructions in Modern Greek,
while exploring their implications for the architecture of grammar.
Most existing treatments of Modern Greek nominals are concerned with
purely syntactic analysis but do not address a variety of intriguing
problems that involve the interrelation of syntax, semantics, and
pragmatics. This monograph seeks to close this gap by integrating
semantic and contextual information in the grammar, providing a
formalization within the multi-dimensional framework of Head-driven
Phrase Structure Grammar
