Dear Subscribers,
Since 1993, when the LINGUIST assistantships were inaugurated,
LINGUIST subscribers have financed the educations of 45 outstanding
graduate students, including this year's crew. Those of you who have
contributed to LINGUIST over the past 10 years can feel proud that you
have helped these students pursue their educational and career goals.
Please help us support the outstanding students who are now providing
you with the services that you have come to expect from LINGUIST. If
you have not yet donated to the Linguist Fund Drive, please do so
now--all of your donations go directly to student support.
Over the past few days your donations have funded another one of our
crew members--Neil Salmond. As each on of our crew members is
funded, we will post their personal letter so that you can see where
your donations go! Below is Neil's letter.

An Interview from the Future.
Bob Interviewer: Good evening, folks. My guest tonight is Professor
Neil Salmond whose controversial new book "The Next Big Thing in
Linguistics" has been the subject of much debate this past week and
also, I think it's fair to say, the butt of much fierce criticism from
within the linguistics community itself.
Prof. Neil Salmond: (smiling, chuckling slightly) Well, Bob, there
will always be those in any scientific community who are just not
ready for change, however compelling the evidence.
Bob: I'm sure. Before we get on to the content of your Book, Neil, I'd
like to talk a little about your own background. You first started
studying Linguistics in Durham, England, is that right?
Neil: That's right, Bob, it was in 1999 - wow, that seems like a long
way back now, though. (Smiles. Audience laughs.) You know, when I
applied there I didn't even know what linguistics was really all
about.
Bob: Is that so?
Neil: I mean I knew it was about language, right enough, but I thought
the discipline stopped at etymology. You know, where words come from:
that kind of thing. I had no idea it was so close to cognitive
science.
Bob: So your time at Durham taught you what linguistics was really all
about?
Neil: It definitely gave me a great start, not only because of the
excellent teaching of Maggie Tallerman, Mike Davenport and
S.J. Hannahs (waves to three professors in the audience, who wave
back) but also because through Dr. Hannahs I got the opportunity to
work at The LINGUIST List.
Bob: The LINGUIST List?
Neil: Yeah. The List is the central online linguistic information
source in the world. I'm not sure there's even anything like it in any
other major academic discipline. It hosts discussions between
linguists, announces all new books and journals published, announces
jobs in linguistics, upcoming conferences, and new software and
hardware for language documentation and suchlike. It really is huge
and, best of all, it's free.
Bob: Free?! You worked there for free?! You must really love
linguistics! (Audience laughs.)
Neil: (Laughing too) Oh no, we didn't work for free. You see, all the
staff there were graduate students studying at Eastern Michigan
University and Wayne State University. The LINGUIST List paid for our
tuition, and provided a stipend to live on. It really worked out well
for both sides.
Bob: I see. So because you were all students, it was the universities
that paid for The LINGUIST List?
Neil: (Laughing.) Oh, no. To raise money, we ran an annual Fund Drive,
which was two months of creative madness in which we tried to squeeze
60,000 dollars out of the linguistics community. With over 18,000
subscribers to our email list it should have been easy - just three
bucks apiece would have done it - but you know how difficult it is
getting donations out of anyone. (Chuckles.)
Bob: That's fascinating. Now let's talk about this book...
**********************************************************************
We have already raised over $43,000! Please help us reach our target
of $60,000. Even a small donation really does make a difference!

Subject: How to Donate...
This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $60,000. This money will go
to help keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student
Editors for the coming year.
There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html
You can also pledge right now and pay later, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html
For all information on donating, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donation.html
ALREADY PLEDGED?
If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay by
credit card, please go to:
http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html
and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the
dropdown list provided.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
