Meeting Description:

ELS9 is the ninth in a series of successful Seminars in the area of
English linguistics. This year's topic is the historical
linguistics-cognitive linguistics interface. The shift we propose
moves the new cognitive science from psychological adequacy to the
historical validation of metaphor and metonymy as dynamic factors in
the history of English.

9th English Linguistics Seminar: the historical linguistics-cognitive
linguistics interface

Huelva University, 3-5 November 2004.

The English Department of Huelva University is organising the 9th
English Linguistics Seminar (Novenas Jornadas de Lingùïstica
Inglesa). The venue will take place in the same city, Huelva (Spain),
from 3-5 November 2004. The Seminar has a long-established reputation
among the Departments of English Linguistics in Spain, mirrors the
interests of a contrastive grammar research project and is ultimately
conceived of as the ideal forum for linguistic enquiry into subjects
such as the syntax-semantics interface or aspect, to name but a few.

This year's topic is the historical linguistics-cognitive linguistics
interface. The focus is here on the benefits that cognitive
linguistics may gain from a historical perspective. In spite of the
fact that the new linguistic paradigm has successfully managed to
restore diachronic mechanisms like metaphor and metonymy to their
central role within language use and change, the historical approach
to these issues has remained largely neglected until now. In this
respect, the 9th English Linguistics Seminar offers the opportunity to
match the dynamics of language with the dynamics of history.

We invite all interested scholars to submit high-quality proposals
(for either papers or workshops) focusing on the role played by
metaphor and metonymy across the history of English. Contributors may
seek to address the historical validation of primary cognitive
insights or may perhaps wish to develop case-in-point analyses applied
to one (or several) historical phases. Contrastive studies are welcome
as well. The Organising Committee will favour proposals with a solid
grasp on empirical methods (the use of corpora, the inclusion of
high-frequency rates, etc.).

Accepted papers must conform to the average time-slot (30 minutes: 20
+ 10 for discussion). In turn, workshops will take longer, an hour
approximately. Abstracts may not exceed 300 words. The whole body of
the proposal (abstract and references) must appear on one page and
should be sent via e-mail to juan.gabriel at dfing.uhu.es by 10th
September 2004.

The Organising Committee intends to publish a selection of the papers
presented at the 9th English Linguistics Seminar in an edited and
peer-reviewed volume.
