Abstract:
Form-Meaning Connections in Second Language Acquisition, edited by
Bill VanPatten, Jessica Williams, Susanne Rott, and Mark Overstreet,
is the first volume to bring together empirical and theoretical
research under the theme of form-meaning connections, defined as "how
learners respond internally to their exposure to linguistic data." It
presents linguistic and cognitive approaches to second language
acquisition, attempting to integrate external and internal issues in
interlanguage development while outlining future directions for
research.
The chapters are based on an interdisciplinary collection of papers
presented at the "Form-Meaning Conference" held in Chicago in
2002. The chapter authors, all well-known second language acquisition
scholars, address form-meaning issues from a variety of settings, as
well as, from multiple perspectives.
Form-Meaning Connections in Second Language Acquisition will be an
appealing resource for researchers and graduate students in applied
linguistics, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and language pedagogy.
