International Colloquium on 'Word Structure and Lexical Systems: Models and
Applications'
Short Title: Lexical Structure
Date: 16-Dec-2004 - 17-Dec-2004
Location: Pavia, Italy
Contact: Elisabetta Jezek
Contact Email: jezek at unipv.it
Meeting URL: http://dobc.unipv.it/linguistica
Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Lexicology; Semantics
Meeting Description:
In light of the central role recently assigned to the lexicon in linguistic
theories, the colloquium aims at bringing together researchers from various
theoretical backgrounds who carry out investigations in the following areas:
- description and representation of lexical information (i.e. semantic,
syntactic, combinatorial);
- investigation of the properties of words and word classes from an
interface perspective (i.e. interrelation between semantic/aspectual
properties and syntactic behavior);
- elaboration of dynamic models of meaning representation, considering
the limits of the compositionality principle in semantics;
- identification of recurrent patterns of meaning/form relation in
world languages with reference to the organization of their lexicons
(i.e. ways of compacting semantic components in lexical items);
- description and representation of syntagmatic phenomena in the
lexicon (i.e. multiword expressions, collocations, light verb
constructions etc.);
- application of lexical models to the development of computational
tools (i.e. computational lexicons) for various purposes (i.e. language
learning, texts production, compilation of lexicographic sources etc.)
- extraction of lexical information from corpora.
The focus of the colloquium is both on the description and
representation of lexical information and on the principles and levels
of organization of entire lexicons. The purpose is to give an overall
view of the most recent acquisitions in these domains, discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of the various theoretical proposals, and
trace the most promising perspectives of study.
