We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Subject: Bad Language
I am embarking on a dissertation about bad language with a particular focus
on gender ie. do men and women swear differently? There is a mountain of
information about bad language, and an even bigger mountain about women's
language - but does anyone know if there's been anything written on this
topic that I can use in my literature review? I'm also looking at what
constitutes a swearword in 2004 in the UK. Thanks in advance for any
assistance any linguists out there can give me.
Regards,
Terri Phillips.

Subject: 'Like an Arrow'
Hello all. I am wondering, in the phrase ''time flies like an arrow''
whether ''like an arrow'' should be considered a prepositional phrase
(''like'' is sometimes listed as a minor preposition) or an adverbial
phrase (''like an arrow'' substitutes nicely for ''quickly'' and other
adverbs and perhaps therefore should be considered an adverbial phrase). I
would appreciate any thoughts you all may have on this.
All best,
