University or Organization: University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras
Job Rank: MA & PhD
Specialty Areas: Contact Languages, Creoles
Announcement: UPR Graduate Programs in Creole Studies
and General Linguistics (MA and PhD)

The Department of English at the Faculty of Humanities
of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras offers
two programs in English linguistics, one at the M.A.
level and one at the Ph.D. level. The unique history
of Puerto Rico and its connections with other islands
in the region make it a strategic site for the study
of Creole languages and Caribbean language situations
in general.

Graduate students in the English Department benefit
from faculty research interests in areas such as
Pidgin and Creole Studies, Language Acquisition,
Ethnography of Speaking, Bilingualism,
Sociolinguistics, Phonology, Syntax, Language
Typology, and Historical Linguistics. Ph.D. students
select from these areas in developing research
projects on Caribbean languages and cultures, often
focusing on the English-lexified Creoles of the
region.

Our deadline for Fall 2005 admission is mid-February.
Deadlines may be able to be negotiated somewhat for
those who express an interest in applying. For an
application or more information please feel free to
contact Professor Nicholas Faraclas at:

nickfaraclas at hotmail.com

Teaching and Research Assistantships are available for
full-time students. Assistants receive a stipend for
two semesters of work per year, approximately $8,000
for M.A. students and $10,000 for Ph.D students.
They also receive a waiver of tuition fees.
Additional monies are available to help defray student
expenses in attending conferences and doing fieldwork
in the Caribbean.
