Language in service encounters: Identities, Interaction, Training
This conference (June 16-17, 2005 : Nancy, France) will enable participants
to speak and hear about work being done in the field of intercultural
communication, with particular reference to one of the most fundamental
types of interaction: service encounters. Calling on research in
sociolinguistics and linguistics, social interaction, conversation analysis
and foreign language didactics, participants will engage with range of
topics and problems, such as: communicative practices and strategies;
sociocultural and plurilingual competence; pragmatic failure; non-verbal
communication; roles, representations and attitudes; pedagogical and
institutional approaches to the training of service providers to the public.
The purpose of the conference is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for
the discussion of the pedagogical and sociolinguistic implications of
research and experience in this field, with the aim of improving the
quality of language training provided to people involved in service encounters.

Theme of the conference :
It is nowadays commonplace to remark that ''the world is getting smaller''.
Whether we express the idea in terms of the 'global village' or of
'globalisation', the idea is the same: contacts and exchanges between
different countries and cultures are rapidly increasing in both frequency
and intensity. Numerous factors - the explosive development of the media,
the establishment of supranational political, commercial and sporting
organisations, the expansion of air travel and tourism, vast academic
exchange programmes - are converging to produce a social and communicative
''glasshouse effect''. Intercultural communication has become unavoidable in
the modern world.
Such communication isn't always effective, however, and speakers' outlooks
can give rise to various kinds of pragmatic dysfunction and
misunderstanding, as well as conflicts of identity.
This conference will enable participants to speak and hear about work being
done in the field of intercultural communication, with particular reference
to one of the most fundamental types of interaction: service encounters.
Calling on research in sociolinguistics and linguistics, social
interaction, conversation analysis and foreign language didactics,
participants will engage with a wide range of topics and problems, such as:
communicative practices and strategies; sociocultural and plurilingual
competence; pragmatic failure; non-verbal communication; roles,
representations and attitudes; pedagogical and institutional approaches to
the training of service providers to the public.
The purpose of the conference is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for
the discussion of the pedagogical and sociolinguistic implications of
research and experience in this field, with the aim of improving the
quality of language training provided to people involved in service
encounters. Service providers, staff trainers, teachers, researchers and
professionals will all have the opportunity to pool information and ideas,
and to describe and discuss their experience and their approaches.
