Assistant Professor of English
(Linguistics/TESOL)

For the 2005-2006 academic year, the Department of English at
Christopher Newport University seeks an assistant professor
(tenure-track) who will teach linguistics, grammar, and TESOL courses
in a master's level teacher education program, innovative first- and
second-year composition seminars in a newly invigorated writing
program, and freshmen seminars as well as upper-level courses for a
new general education curriculum.  The successful applicant will work
with one other linguist in the department, teaching within the
language arts concentration of an English major. Successful candidates
will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education and the
teaching of freshman; offer evidence of scholarly work in Linguistics
and TESOL; and have a doctorate in Linguistics by August 2005. Those
with credentials in TESOL, experience in educational linguistics and
secondary specializations in Sociolinguistics and Language and Society
are preferred. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to apply
specializations and TESOL background to create general education
courses in language and culture.

Christopher Newport University, a selective, state-supported liberal
arts and sciences university of 5,000 students, is located on the
Virginia Peninsula between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.  The
University is seeking outstanding teachers who will engage
undergraduate and graduate students in creative and disciplined
