Description:
Background:
The Department of Linguistics at Ohio University has taught courses in
African languages since the 1970s and currently offers a wide
selection, including courses in Swahili, Kikuyu, Twi, Somali, and
Sudanese Arabic, with Hausa and Siswati also offered on demand. These
courses are offered through a partnership with the African Studies
Program at Ohio University, a National Resource Center for
Africa. Ohio University hosted the Summer Cooperative African Language
Institute in both 2003 and 2004.
Minimum qualifications:
- PhD in African languages, linguistics, applied linguistics, or
foreign language education.
- Strong research record in one of the above fields.
- Native or near-native competence in Swahili and/or Hausa or another
African language.
- Experience as a teacher and coordinator of African languages,
preferably in the United States.
Responsibilities:
- Teach Swahili or Hausa or another African language, as well as one or
more courses per year in linguistics and/or applied linguistics.
- Supervise and train Swahili and other African language TAs in the
use of current and effective classroom teaching techniques.
- Serve as African Language Coordinator for the African Studies
Program.
- Conduct research in African languages, linguistics, applied
linguistics, and/or foreign language education.
Position starting date: September 1, 2005
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
