Workshop on Linguistic Convergence in Bilingualism and Language Contact
November 10, 2005, The Pennsylvania State University

Abstracts are invited on original and unpublished research on all aspects in the
domain of linguistic convergence of Spanish, Portuguese or other Iberian
languages in contexts of bilingualism and language contact, including, but not
limited to: phonological convergence, lexical convergence, syntactic
convergence, semantic and discourse convergence.
The workshop will feature two plenary addresses by prominent researchers:
James Emil Flege, Univeristy of Alabama, whose work is focused on interaction of
first and second language sound systems
Antonella Sorace, University of Edinburgh, whose principal research interest is
the development and representations of syntactic knowledge in adult second
language acquisition and attrition.
The workshops will be incorporated within a broader context of linguistic
activity at The Pennsylvania State University: the Workshop on Language
Processing and the joint meeting of the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium and the
Conference on the Acquisition of Spanish and Portuguese as First and Second
Languages, to be held November 10-13, 2005. These workshops and symposia feature
plenary addresses by Manuel Carreiras (Universidad de la Laguna), Jose Ignacio
Hualde (University of Illinois), Antonella Sorace (University of Edinburgh),
Almeida Jacqueline Toribio (The Pennsylvania State University), and Juan
Uriagereka (University of Maryland).
Abstract deadline: June 1, 2005.
Abstracts for the Workshop on Linguistic Convergence must be at most one page
long on a letter-size sheet (8"'1/2 by 11"') with one-inch margins and typed in
at least 11-point font. An optional second page is permitted for data and
references. Abstracts must be anonymous.
Submissions are limited to 1 individual or joint abstract per author.
Abstracts must be submitted as a PDF file. Electronic submissions for this
workshop should be sent to the following e-mail address: convergence at psu.edu
Please use 'Convergence Abstract' as the Subject header and include the
information in (1) - (6), which should constitute the body of the message.
Please make sure that all fonts are embedded.

(Catalan, Galician, etc.), including, but not limited to: phonological
processing, lexical processing, syntactic processing, semantic and discourse
processing, and language production.

word recognition, sentence comprehension and the cortical representation of
human language.
