DPhil Studentship for October 2005

Oxford University Computing Laboratory invites applications for a
three-year EPSRC-funded studentship award to commence in October 2005.
The successful applicant will work in the Oxford University Computing
Laboratory, and at Sharp Laboratories of Europe, on Example-Based Machine
Translation. The applicant will be jointly supervised by Dr. Stephen Clark
from the Computing Laboratory, and Dr. Victor Poznanski and Dr. Pete
Whitelock from Sharp Laboratories of Europe.

The project will focus on Example-Based Machine Translation (EBMT) and will
start by examining the methodology and some of the tools used in the
development of an existing EBMT system developed at Sharp. Language pairs
of interest include English-Chinese and English-Japanese. The successful
applicant will be mostly based in the Oxford University Computing
Laboratory, but the project will include a placement of at least 3 months
at Sharp Laboratories of Europe, also based in Oxford.

Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in Computer
Science, Mathematics, Computational Linguistics, or some other relevant
scientific background. Familiarity with empirical techniques in natural
language processing is highly desirable. Programming experience is

The award will cover University and College fees and provide a
subsistence allowance at the EPSRC Industrial CASE level, which is 16,000
p.a. for 2005/2006. Only EU applicants are eligible for the fees allowance,
and only U.K. applicants are eligible for the fees and subsistence allowance.
