Multilingualism and Applied Comparative Linguistics (MACL)

AIM 
In recent years, there has been a proliferation of research related to issues of
multilingualism and cross-cultural communication. Because of the vast nature of
this enterprise, this research has often been carried out within separate
disciplines, such as educational linguistics, cultural linguistics,
sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, translation studies, comparative terminology
studies and studies of domain-specific languages. This conference, however, aims
at a more multidisciplinary approach and will bring together experts from
different branches of applied linguistics who share a common interest in the
applicability and/or application of comparative linguistic insights to the
following core domains: 
1. second/foreign language teaching 
2. multilingual and cross-cultural communication 
3. terminology and domain-specific languages 
4. translation studies. 

CALL FOR PAPERS 
Abstracts (maximum 500 words) for 30-minute presentations (including question

Exchange of Lexical and Terminological Resources in Machine Translation (MT),
Computer-Aided Translation (CAT) and Terminology Management Systems (TMS)

The use of CAT tools has become standard practice in the daily work of
translators and localisers. As terminological and lexical resources are crucial
for high quality translation, the development of lexicon and terminology
exchange formats has become an essential issue. Exchange formats which
facilitate the sharing of lexicons and terminologies make a significant
contribution to the management and quality assurance in large translation projects.

Over the last years, various open XML-based standards such as OLIF (Open Lexicon
Interchange Format) or XLT (XML representation of Lexicons and Terminologies)
have been developed for the exchange of lexicons. Among the standards which have
been proposed on the terminological side are formats such as MARTIF
(Machine-Readable Terminology Interchange Format) or TBX (Term Base Exchange).
Nevertheless, many distributors of MT or CAT tools still use proprietary formats
for the export and import of lexical or terminological data. 

The announced workshop aims to bring together developers, MT users, translators
and localisers who are interested in the integration of lexical and
terminological resources. We welcome contributions to the following topics:

-  lexicon exchange formats and their support in different software packages
-  import and export formats in MT systems (PT, PROMT, T1, etc)
-  import and export formats in terminology management systems (Multiterm,
TermStar, etc)
-  tools for converting lexical resources between diffferent formats
-  experiences of translators or MT-users with  the integration of lexical resources

If you are interested in participating in the workshop please submit an abstract
(approx. 250 words) stating the title of your presentation to
uta.seewald-heeg at inf.hs-anhalt.de. Presentations will be allotted 15 - 30 minutes.

Submission deadline: April 30, 2005
Registration deadline: May 30, 2005
Participation at the conference is free

The University of Applied Sciences (HS Anhalt) in Köthen is located in the
Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and can be reached by train from Leipzig or Berlin.
