The colloquium will be an opportunity for contact and exchange between
participants interested in the connection between the teaching of languages and
their application in the reality of the job market.  It will include
presentations of papers, application workshops, and a round table discussion on
applied languages policies and curricula. The colloquium will therefore be open
to professionals of language teaching, professionals from all fields of
activities where a good command of language is a necessity, and of course
students. The selected papers will be published in a précis of the colloquium.

Call for Papers

International Colloquium on 

Teaching Applied Languages: Theory and Practice

In the current context of increased globalization of local economies, the
question of teaching languages of specialization at the university level has
become more acute than ever before.  To face the new challenges of
globalization, educators and political decision makers alike are pushing for a
generalization of these teachings in university curricula.

The term of ''language of specialization'' implies a particular approach to
language teaching that consists in structuring a language syllabus to meet
clearly identified needs, be they professional or academic. A corerrelary of
this situation is linking language teaching to a content which is a priori new
to the language teacher, making it necessary for the instructor to resort to
teaching strategies different from those used in a ''traditional'' language
course.  What is the specificity of a language of specialization and how
different should the approach to its teaching be? 

It is within this perspective that the ''Institut Supérieur des Langues
Appliquées et d'Informatique de Nabeul'' and the ''Institut Supérieur des
Langues de Tunis'' will hold, on the 24, 25, and 26 of November 2005, at the
city of Nabeul, Tunisia, an international colloquium dedicated to ''Teaching
Applied Languages: Theory and Practice.''

Papers can be proposed for any of the following five rubrics:

- Institutional experiences in the development, teaching, and management of
teaching programs in applied languages. We would like to learn about already set
up programs and experiments in the teaching of applied languages worldwide and
how they compare in effectiveness with ''traditional'' language programs.
- Programs and teaching methods of applied languages: what modifications in
teaching approaches and strategies result from the introduction of applied
languages in university curricula? How effective are these modifications? 
- Job perspectives in applied languages: what are the demands of the job market
in terms of qualifications in applied languages? 
- Research in applied languages: reports on recent research on the formal and
discourse aspects of applied languages.
- The role of translation in the teaching and use of applied languages: what
role or roles can the formal teaching of translation play in teaching applied
languages? What is the relative importance of translation in the actual use of
applied langauges in the job market? What practical implications does that imply
for the formal teaching of translation at the university level?

The colloquium will include presentation sessions of papers and application or
demonstration workshops. Presentations are limited to twenty minutes followed by
ten minutes of questions and answers.  Presentations can be made in any of the
following languages: Arabic, English, and French.  Interested candidates are
invited to send a 250 word abstract of their paper no later than June 15, 2005
at midnight. Abstracts can be sent by mail, fax, or e-mail to the following

Abstracts sent by mail or fax should include the author's full name,
affiliation, and contact information on the top 5 lines of the page.  If
submission is by e-mail, the same information should appear in the body of the
e-mail messages while the abstract itself should be in an attached Word or PDF
file. Authors of the selected abstracts will be notified before July 15, 2005,
and are invited to submit a Microsoft Word version of their paper by October 15,
2005.
