Description:

PhD Studentship - The Discourse of Genomics
Faculty of Technology in collaboration with the Faculty of Education and
Language Studies.

Applications are invited for a three year full time studentship starting in
October 2005.  The project will benefit from connections with the ESRC 
Centre for the Study of Social and Economic Aspects of Innovation in 
Genomics (INNOGEN), co-directed by the Open University and the University 
of Edinburgh. 

The studentship covers fees and provides a maintenance grant, which will be
£12,000 in the 2005-2006 academic year.  Candidates should have a good BA 
or BSc (Hons) degree, and preferably a master's degree, in a relevant 
area. Applications from candidates with germane NGO, business, or other 
work experience are also welcome.

The student will undertake qualitative research on the language and social
construction of innovations in genomics, and the politics of such
constructions.  He or she will explore these issues through comparisons of
genomics controversies such as those over GM crops, medical practices 
including genetic screening and testing, and stem cell research.
