Meeting Description:

The conference will focus on higher education that is delivered in a second/foreign language in a country where the language is not widely used in the local environment. While this often concerns higher education in English in a non-English-speaking country, it is not always the case: other languages are also used. The conference aims to address issues that affect institutions in many countries worldwide. 

Maastricht University, the Netherlands, is pleased to host the second conference in Europe that specifically addresses issues affecting the interface between content and language in higher education: ''Integrating content and language in higher education'' (ICLHE 2006).

Conference themes

The conference themes are grouped in four sections: 

1. Educational approaches that promote the integration of content and language in higher education
2. Content adaptations as a result of learning through a foreign language and of having a multicultural/multilingual student population and academic staff (e.g. documentation in other languages, adaptation of tasks and assignments, allowing language switching)
3. Course and programme design, especially master's programmes, promoting the development of writing and research skills
4. Evaluation and assessment of ICLHE programmes

While priority is given to research-based contributions, other contributions are also welcome.

Call for contributed papers

We invite proposals on the themes of the conference from academic teaching staff and researchers, educationalists, linguists, methodologists and ICT specialists, as well as policy and strategic planners, and others with experience and interest in higher education mediated through a second/foreign language.

Proposals should be submitted via the on-line form at: http://www.unimaas.nl/iclhe/ 

The deadline for proposals is November 1, 2005. 

Proposals may take the form of conference papers, posters, workshops or colloquia. The organizers of a workshop or a colloquium would be responsible for recruiting the speakers. Length of paper presentations: 15-20 minutes followed by 10-minutes discussion. Length of colloquia or workshops: 1½ hours maximum.

The official language of the conference is English. Proposals (and contributions) are welcome in other languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian). All proposals will be reviewed by the Conference Scientific Committee. Selected papers from the conference will later be published in the proceedings.
