SECOND WORKSHOP ON THE REPRESENTATION AND PROCESSING OF SIGN LANGUAGES
Lexicographic matters and didactic scenarios. 

Workshop on the occasion of the 5th International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC2006).

Meeting background

On the occasion of LREC2004, the first workshop on the Representation and Processing of Sign Languages was held with good attendance. A great variety of topics and approaches was discussed, but since this field is considerably younger than the processing of spoken and written languages, a vast number of important questions still remain to be answered.

The workshop will centre on the crucial question of representing a sign language electronically and, in this perspective, it will serve to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in sign language research, thus stimulating the exchange of information and resources. In particular, we would like to pay specific attention to the lexicographic treatment of sign languages, thus hinting at the problem of collecting sign language corpora and of describing sign languages through a (new?) metalinguistic code that really suits them.
Besides the lexicographic questions, we would also like to discuss possible interactive didactic scenarios (i.e. e-learning modules) that will promote sign language learning on the one hand, and support deaf people in their learning path on the other. The discussion will possibly cover topics which act at the boundary of these two research fields such as the question of the articulation between the different layers of a sign language (lexical, textual etc.) and the related question of how to conceive didactic tools to illustrate and teach this articulation.

Call for papers

Papers are invited on substantial, original and unpublished research on
all aspects of sign language representation and processing, including,
but not limited to:

-sign language dictionaries
-representation of sign language data
-corpus collection and construction for sign languages
-image processing research
-didactic tools for sign language teaching and learning 
-e-learning of sign languages
-any topic related to sign language treatment and processing

Submissions of papers for oral and poster presentations should follow
the same stylesheet as the ones for regular LREC paper. The details can 
be found at http://www.lrec-conf.org/lrec2006 .

Demonstrations and related tools will be reviewed as well. You should
send an outline of about 400 words. If a demo is connected to a paper,
please attach the outline to the paper.

The papers and demonstration outlines, written in English, should be
attached to an email message sent to the following address (cvettori
at eurac dot edu). Please include the name and the affiliation of the
author(s) in the body of the email message. 

The deadline for paper submission is February 3rd, 2006. 
Notice of acceptance or rejection will be sent on February 24th, 2006.

We allow simultaneous paper submission to the workshop and the LREC
main conference. If a paper is accepted by both the conference and the
workshop, the paper will be presented at the conference, rather than at
the workshop. The author(s) should notify the workshop chair.

Papers will be published in the proceedings of the workshop (each workshop
and the main conference have separate proceedings).
