'Tailoring Health Messages' provides a forum to present and discuss approaches
for the development of tailored health messages from different academic
disciplines and practitioners alike. 

Tailoring Health Messages: Bridging the Gap between Social and Humanistic
Perspectives on Health Communication, 6-10 July 2005, Monte Verità, Switzerland

With the epidemic of chronic diseases caused by habitual unhealthy behaviors,
tailoring health messages - individualizing health information on the large
scale - has demonstrated great potential to meet each person's unique needs. The
conference will assess theoretical and practical concerns when examining the
content, structure, delivery and evaluation of tailored health messages from an
interdisciplinary perspective. Traditional perspectives on the subject from the
behavioral sciences will be contrasted with approaches from the humanities and
professional experience, including those of physicians, health care providers
and media-experts. The goal is to develop a set of strategic maneuvers for
guiding the efficient production of effective tailored health messages.

The conference is being organized by the Health Care Communication Laboratory at
the University of Lugano (Switzerland). The Organizing Committee comprises David
Brinberg (Co-Chair), Antonella Carassa, Marco Colombetti, Joachim Haes, Sara
Rubinelli, Peter Schulz (Co-Chair), Bernadette Toti, and Benedetta
Waldburger-Crivelli. Tailoring Health Messages provides a forum to present and
discuss approaches for the development of tailored health messages from
different disciplines. 

Authors are invited to submit papers on the four stages of producing
tailored health messages:
- Collecting data and assessing people's perceptions of illness and treatments
- Creating structure and meaning
- Delivering health messages through mass-media, health campaigns, and new
technologies (e.g. the Internet)
- Evaluating impact and potential 

The committee particularly encourages proposals on the following topics:
- Choosing the right message for health campaigns
- Logical-linguistic strategies for tailoring health messages
- Using mass-media for targeted health communication
- Evaluating health messages and campaigns

Guidelines for submission of abstracts: abstracts should have 300-400 words; the
committee will invite full papers for publication in the proceedings.
Submissions should include a separate statement (maximum 300 words) on the
author's relevant interests and background. Postgraduate students are encouraged
to apply. Abstracts (with subject "THEME2005") should be sent by email to
sara.rubinelli at lu.unisi.ch.

Notification of acceptance: April 4, 2005
