Meeting Description:

In 2006 we shall be celebrating two important events in which English Language
studies at Manchester has been centrally involved:  the journal English Language
and Linguistics will have completed ten increasingly successful years, and a new
one-volume History of the English Language will be published.

In order to celebrate this double event we are holding a three-day conference
entitled Directions in English Language Studies (DELS) which is intended to
focus on current and, especially, future directions in English Language
research, both synchronic and diachronic.

The following distinguished scholars have all agreed to present plenary papers:
 Joan Bresnan, Christian Mair, John McWhorter, Donka Minkova, Terttu Nevalainen
and Geoff Pullum.

Abstracts are now invited for shorter papers (20 minutes + 10 discussion),
submission deadline 31 October 2005, details of submission procedure to follow.
  Any aspect of English Language studies, synchronic and/or diachronic, may be
covered, but preference will be given to those with something to say about
current directions in research or which indicate new directions.

We look forward to an exciting programme and to meeting both old and new friends

Meeting Description:

This year the annual meeting of the South Asian Language Analysis roundtable is
celebrating its 25th (silver) anniversary and it also coincides with the 40th
anniversary of the Department of Linguistics. The conference will consist of a
General Session, a Parasession and a Special Session. There will be a
pre-conference symposium on language teaching.

GENERAL SESSION

The General Session will cover all areas of South Asian linguistic interest. We
encourage individual papers or panel proposals from diverse theoretical
frameworks and especially welcome those with interdisciplinary focus.

theoretical-conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions that studies
in South Asian languages have made to the area of applied linguistics.

This session brings together scholars in the field of South Asian language
studies who will discuss the implications of globalization on the dynamics of
(multi-lingual) communities, (plural) identities, movements of linguistic
capital in global and transnational spaces, and, especially, on the forms of
sociolinguistic representations that are responses to non-local contexts and
influences.

An author may submit at most one single and one joint abstract. In case of joint
authorship, one address should be designated for communication with SALA.
Abstracts should be as specific as possible, with a statement of topic, approach
and conclusions, and should be no more than 400 words (not including data and
references, which may be placed on the reverse side).  5 copies of an anonymous,
one-page (8.5''x11'') abstract should be sent, along with a 3''x5'' card listing:
     (1) paper title
     (2) session (General/Para/Special)
     (3) name(s) of author(s)
     (4) affiliation(s) of author(s)
     (5) address where notification of acceptance should be sent
     (6) phone number for each author
     (7) email address for each author
     (8) subfield (syntax, phonology, discourse analysis, bilingualism etc.)

PRE-CONFERENCE SYMPOSIUM (Sept. 15, 2005): "Delivering South Asian Languages:
Current Practices, Future Models"

This symposium is designed to rethink/re-assess the curricular practices in
teaching South Asian languages and to find ways to engage them with current
paradigms of research in second/foreign language teaching.

PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION
Individual presentations are allotted 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Panels can be proposed for either a 2-hr or a 3-hr period.  An attempt will be
made to publish selected papers (revised and edited) presented at the conference.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
All attendees, including presenters, must register for the conference. For
advance registration, we can accept only checks or money orders drawn on US
banks in US dollars, made payable to the University of Illinois.
