Dissertation Title: Um Olhar Comunicativo Sobre Atividades de Leitura em
Materiais Didaticos de Portugues Como Segunda Lingua

Dissertation Abstract:
This qualitative research investigates the approach used in the coursebook
Bem-Vindo!, used for the teaching of Portuguese as a second language. Our
main aim is to investigate if the approach assumed by the authors and
publishers as to be 'communicative' is verified in the 120 reading
activities proposed in the coursebook. In order to do so, not only did we
analyse the aforementioned readind activities but also used a questionnaire
to gather the impressions of 42 teachers of Portuguese to speakers of other
languages. Taking into account the fact that the Applied Linguistics
theory defines reading as an interactive activity, the results obtained
revealed a mismatch between the approach assumed by the authors and its
realization in the coursebook.
