CONFERENCE ON MANNER ALTERNATIONS IN PHONOLOGY
24-26 June 2005
Zentrum fuer Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft
Berlin, Germany
Second Call for Papers
The topic of this conference is the category manner in phonology, i.e.
(traditional) features such as [nasal], [lateral], [continuant],
[strident], as well as processes which alter these features. Manner
features are necessary to distinguish classes of sounds such as stops,
affricates, fricatives, nasals, laterals, as well as lesser understood
sound such as rhotics. Manner categories are also instrumental in defining
what is meant by sonority.
The three invited speakers:
Wolfgang Kehrein, Phillips Universitaet Marburg
Jerzy Rubach, Uniwersytet Warszawski/ University of Iowa
Moira Yip, University College London
In addition to these speakers there will be slots for approximately 15 papers.
While abstracts are invited on papers dealing with any aspect dealing with
manner in phonology, papers dealing with the following topics are of
particular interest:
1. Phonological processes (synchronic or diachronic) which alter manner
features and their phonetic and/or phonological motivation
2. Connection between manner features and other features (e.g. place,
laryngeal, major class)
3. Connection between manner changes and prosodic structure (e.g. processes
motivated by the syllable contact law, definitions of sonority)
4. Features for rhotics (i.e. central approximants, trills, taps/flaps)
5. Phonetic correlates for manner features
Papers will be 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes discussion. Deadline for
submission of abstracts is 8 April 2005. Notification of acceptance for
program by 18 April. There will be no conference fees. Please submit
electronically an anonymous, two page abstract (pdf, word or rtf) to:
cmap at zas.gwz-berlin.de
Please indicate the authors name and affiliation in the email.

We are pleased to announce the 2005 BIDE (Bilbao-Deusto) Student Conference
in Linguistics. The aim of BIDE is to serve as rendezvous for new
generations of academics from all areas of linguistic research. BIDE
provides students a welcoming atmosphere where they can present their own
work and get feedback from peers as well as senior researchers.
Abstracts are due on or before April 8, 2005. Your proposal should describe
original, unpublished work that may be in progress. Authors are limited to
maximum of one individual and one joint submission (papers co-authored with
faculty will not be accepted). Send your abstract as a PDF or WORD file to
bide05 at fil.deusto.es with 'abstract submission' in the subject field. The
abstract should be anonymous and abide by the following specifications: do
not exceed two pages (examples and references included); use 1 inch (2.54
cms) margins on all sides; and a 12 point size font (preferably Times New
Roman). Include your name(s), title of the paper, affiliation(s) and
contact information in the email body and indicate what area of linguistics
your contribution fits in best, e.g. morphology, phonetics, phonology,
semantics, syntax and so on.
Notification of acceptance will be sent around the first week of May.
Accepted papers are allowed 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for
discussion.
The papers presented at BIDE'05 are eligible for publication in the
