Based in the French Section of the School of Modern Languages, you will be
part of a 3-year AHRC-funded project entitled "The Structure of French
Interlanguage: A corpus-based study", starting in October 2005, and
directed by Professors Florence Myles (Newcastle) and Rosamond Mitchell
(Southampton).  

The aims of the project are:

- To carry out a substantive programme of research on an extensive
electronic database of oral learner French (www.flloc.soton.ac.uk), in
order to (a) document and analyse learner French from beginners to final
year undergraduates (syntax, morphology, discourse, formulaic language),
and (b) answer questions of current theoretical interest about the nature
and development of learner languages.  

- To collect a corpus of AS/A level oral learner French, as well as a small
control sample of native French, for inclusion in the above-mentioned
web-based database which will then contain oral French learner data for all
levels, from beginners to undergraduates. 

You will contribute to all aspects of the project; in particular, you will
play a major role in researching one (or more) areas of French syntax,
morphology or discourse in order to contribute to the substantive agenda
summarised above, and will be responsible for leading all aspects of the
fieldwork.  You will hold a PhD in French Linguistics or French Applied
Linguistics, and will have some research expertise in language acquisition.
Additionally, you will have some experience of fieldwork, and will have
excellent organisational and communication skills, and native or
near-native competence in French.
