Subject: Obituary: Timothy Shopen
We regret to inform you of the sad news that Tim Shopen passed away on
Monday 6 June, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. The funeral
service will be at Norwood Park Crematorium, Sandford Street,
Mitchell, Australia ACT on Friday June 10 at 11 am [AEST]. From 2:30
p.m. friends are invited to share memories and music at his and
Gillian's home, 25 Woodgate St, Farrer. Friends who cannot attend are
invited to send written email messages to the Administrator, School of
Language Studies, Rebecca.goulding at anu.edu.au, who will compile them
for reading and presentation to the family. Please send them by 5pm
Thursday [= Midnight June 9, PDT], with cc to Tim's wife Gillian at
Gillian.alcock at netspeed.com.au and Tim's son Pablo at
pabloshopen at hotmail.com.
Tim was a Visiting Fellow in the School of Language Studies. He was
formally a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics in the Department of
Linguistics (now part of the School of Language Studies) from 1975
until his retirement at the end of 1998. He served as Head of
Department during 1997-98. Tim was an energetic and dedicated teacher
and often taught the introductory course in linguistics. He was for
much of his career the sole specialist in Applied Linguistics at the
ANU, and developed the graduate program in this specialty. He edited 7
volumes in linguistics. He will best be remembered for 3-volume
handbook, Language typology and syntactic description (Cambridge UP
1985), the revised edition of which he was in progress of preparing
with his US-based co-editor Matthew Dryer. He also made important
contributions to the study of Aboriginal child language, based on
fieldwork in Yuendumu N.T. on the Warlpiri language.
