Meeting Description:

In the workshop we will bring together researchers from the following fields:
data analysis (ERP, EEG, MEG) on the one hand and dynamical system approaches to
symbolic computation, on the other. Part A will be devoted to linear and
nonlinear approaches to the analysis of electrophysiological time series,
especially synchronization analysis, blind source separation, and symbolic
dynamics. In part B we shall discuss connectionist models, nonlinear dynamical
automata and analog computation capabilities of dynamical systems. Both parts
are closely connected through the issues of psycholinguistic ERP research.

The University of Potsdam (near Berlin) has won a DFG grant for an
interdisciplinary research unit on ''Conflicting Rules in Cognitive Systems'',
where psychologists, linguists, physicists and computer scientists are working
together. Our division is devoted to measuring, analyzing, interpreting and
modeling event-related brain potentials (ERP) in human language processing. One
of our focuses is the application of nonlinear data analysis techniques and
models.

In the workshop we will bring together researchers from the following fields:

capabilities of dynamical systems. Both parts are closely connected through the
issues of psycholinguistic ERP research. Two questions form our main interests:

   1. Compositionality and Binding. Can constituency be achieved by
synchronicity of neural oscillations?
   2. The Symbol Grounding Problem. How can symbol processors be implemented and
embodied by neurodynamical systems?
