40th International Conference on Salish and Neighbouring Languages
Vancouver, British Columbia
August 10-12, 2005

This year's ICSNL 40 conference will be hosted by the Musqueam Indian Band, the
University of British Columbia First Nations Languages Program, and the
University of British Columbia Department of Linguistics.  The conference will
take place on the Musqueam Indian Reserve in Vancouver, British Columbia, on
Wednesday August 10 through Friday August 12, 2005. Papers on all aspects of the
study, preservation, and teaching of Salish and neighbouring languages are welcome.

Papers for the ICSNL pre-print volume, which will be compiled and distributed
prior to the conference by the University of British Columbia Working Papers in
Linguistics, should be submitted to the UBCWPL editors (address below) by
Friday, May 27, 2005. Please note that, as in previous years, there will also be
an opportunity in the conference program for the presentation of papers not
included in the pre-print volume.

Guidelines for paper submissions to UBCWPL ICSNL 40:
There are no page limits.  Electronic submissions are encouraged.  Word files
with any special fonts will be accepted; however, PDF files are preferred.  A
style sheet is available at http://www.linguistics.ubc.ca/UBCWPL/. Contact the

Conference theme: "Sri Lanka after Five Hundred Years of Western Colonization
and Future Perspectives"

The International Conference on Sri Lanka Studies (ICSLS) is a biennial meeting
of scholars studying various aspects of past and contemporary society and
culture of Sri Lanka. Since 1987 ICSLS has been a forum for scholars on Sri
Lanka Studies to promote exchange of research findings and initiate future
research.

The 10th International Conference on Sri Lankan Studies will be held from 16th
to 18th December 2005 at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Theme of the
10th ICSLS is "Sri Lanka after Five Hundred Years of Western Colonization and
Future Perspectives".

Colonial powers impacted Sri Lanka for nearly five centuries. The Portuguese
(1505-1658), Dutch (1658-1796), and British (1796-1815) ruled the coastal region
of Sri Lanka. The British ruled the entire island from 1815 until its
Independence in 1948. The consequences of colonial administration are clearly
evident in culture, society, education, economy, administration, etc. and also
shaped Sri Lanka society today. In 1998, the country celebrated five decades
since Independence. The year 2005 completes five hundred years since European
colonization and is a useful moment to look back and to the future. The 10th
ICSLS will focus on negative and positive aspects as well as future perspectives
based on this historical process and its consequences. The conference aims to
provide a platform for evaluating, analysing, rethinking and planning in the
light of past experience.

Papers are invited from a wide variety of fields including, but not limited to
anthropology, archeology, architecture, culture and society, defense studies,
demography, development studies, economics, education, ethnic studies,
environmental studies, fine arts, gender studies, geography, history,
information schiences, languages and literature studies, management studies,
media studies, philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies and
sociology

Guidelines for Panel Proposals: Those wishing to convey a panel on a relevant
sub-theme are invited to send a proposal of around 600 words and a brief resume
of the organizer by 30th March. Guidelines for Abstracts Abstracts should be
based on previously unpublished empirical or theoretical work and contain
250-350 words.

Abstracts should preferably give a concise overview of the presentation
including objectives, scope of the problem, major issues addressed and
conclusions and five key words. Abstract and brief resume/s of the author/s
should be send by regular-mail or e-mail, preferably the latter. The deadline
for submitting abstracts is 30th June 2005. For abstract submission and all

Registration is mandatory for all presenters and the participants.
Registration fee is LKR 2000 for participants from South Asia and US$ 100 for
others. Late registration will be based on a 50% surcharge to the registration
