We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: Ethics Around Internet Data
Dear all,
I am doing a PhD at the University of Manchester (UK) and I was wondering
if anyone knows anything about the ethics on collecting data from the
Internet (privacy and confidentiality issues).
I investigate the use of Cypriot Greek in Computer-mediated Communication
and my data will consist of people's online interactions on the MSN
Messenger and MIRC channels.
Any ideas of what i sould bear in mind?
Many thanks,
Christiana Themistocleous

Subject: Phonology of Ossetic
I was wondering if anyone knew about the phonology of Ossetic, namely, is
it possible to have aspirated voiceless stops in the middle of a word?
It was just a question that came up in my Phonology class, and the
professor wasn't sure.
