Abstract:

Woordensmederij is volgens de dikke Van Dale 'het maken van nieuwe woorden'
en dat is dan ook het onderwerp van dit boek: het beschrijft de
mogelijkheden van taalgebruikers om woorden te vormen op -erij. Het
probeert te achterhalen hoe deze mogelijkheden in het Nederlands ontstaan
zijn en hoe ze zich ontwikkeld hebben door de eeuwen heen. Deze studie is
dus in eerste instantie descriptief: ze wil een goed beeld geven van de
geschiedenis van het suffix -erij en zijn varianten (zoals -arij en
-derij). Daarbij komen allerlei verschijnselen aan bod die ook van belang
zijn voor morfologische verandering of taalverandering in het algemeen.
Ontlening, verschillende herinterpretatieprocessen, klankverandering,
allomorfie, metonymie en polysemie, analogie, productiviteit - deze en
andere onderwerpen worden uitvoerig behandeld in het licht van de
ontwikkeling van -erij. Ook de morfologische theorievorming zal van de
resultaten van het onderzoek kunnen profiteren. 

Woordensmederij richt zich tot iedereen met belangstelling voor de
Nederlandse morfologie of voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlands.
