Meeting Description:

Language and Identity conference will be organized by the Department of General Linguistics of Kazakh State University. The conference will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. 

CALL FOR PAPERS:
The last third of the twentieth century witnessed a surge of the so-called ''ethnic revival'' with a renewed stress on language in various mobilizations of ethnicity and nationalism through the world. The aim of the conference is to explore the process and mechanisms of collective identity formation, role of language in identity transformation, language and ethnic conflicts, role of education in language identity shaping. Topics may include among others: 

-	Language and identity: theoretical perspectives
-	Language contact and identity
-	Language and ethnic identity
-	Language identity in transforming society

Submission information:

Full-length paper (14, 000 symbols, Times New Roman, Microsoft Word 6.0 or higher) should be submitted electronically by email, in subject line write 'Language and identity and conference'. All papers will be reviewed. 

Deadline for paper submissions: 	February 1, 2006
Notification of acceptance: 	March 1, 2006.  

Registration fee is $30. 
Conference registration information and conference program will be sent with notification. 

All submissions should include:
-	The title of the paper
-	50 word abstract
-	Full-length paper (14,000 symbols)
-	Name and affiliation of the author
-	The author's postal address
-	The authors email address
-	Key words (no more than 5 words)

Selected papers will be published prior the conference.
The travel and subsistence costs are paid by the participants.
 

NOTE: The panel 'Language identity in transforming society' will be organized in the framework of the INTAS project on 'New language identity in transforming society: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan' (6th Framework Programme) and aims to bring together project working teams and scholars working in the same filed for exchange of knowledge and information.

This is the first time for AFLA to be held in a place where a number of Austronesian languages are still actively spoken.  We invite submissions of abstracts in any area of Austronesian linguistics.  Each paper will be allotted 30 minutes, with 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.

An additional page for data, figures, and references may be included.  Already published papers will not be accepted.  The abstract should include the title, and should be submitted by email as both Word and PDF attachments to afla13 at gate.sinica.edu.tw.  Please indicate 'afla13 abstract_(your full name)' in the subject heading, and include the following information in the body of your email message:

(2) Name(s) of the author(s)
(3) Affiliation(s) of the author(s)
