Meeting Description:

The Conference on Laboratory Approaches to Spanish Phonology draws researchers
from North America and Europe interested in experimental work that offers
insight into the sound structure of Spanish. This may include, but is not
limited to, data from phonetic, perception, language acquisition,
psycholinguistic, and speech disorder studies. 

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations in English or Spanish on any
area of Spanish phonology from an experimental perspective. The phrase
''laboratory approaches'' is intended in its broadest possible sense and
includes any experimental work that offers insight into the sound structure of
Spanish. This may include, but is not limited to, data from phonetic,
perception, language acquisition, psycholinguistic, and speech disorder studies.
A special session on the use of technology, including software, databases, and
imaging techniques, will be held as part of the conference.

Abstracts should not exceed one-page in length, Times (New Roman), 12 point with
1'' margins. A second page for references may be included. Two electronic copies
(PDF format) must be provided, including one anonymous version. On a separate
sheet, please include the following information: author's (i) name; (ii)
affiliation; (iii) mailing address; (iv) e-mail address and (v) fax number.
Authors should indicate whether they wish their presentation to be considered
for the main session or workshop. Please send abstracts to lasp at utoronto.ca.

The 42nd annual meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society will be held 6-8 April
2006 at the University of Chicago. 

Call for Papers - CLS 42

The 42nd annual meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society will be held April
6-8, 2006 at the University of Chicago.  This year's conference will include a
main session and three parasessions described below.

- Main Session -

Invited Speakers:
Douglas Pulleyblank - University of British Columbia
Marianne Mithun - University of California, Santa Barbara
John Ohala - University of California, Berkeley

We invite speakers from all major linguistic subfields and frameworks as well as
from related cross-disciplinary areas.

- Parasession: Case and Voice -

Invited Speaker:
Jason Merchant - University of Chicago

This parasession will explore issues of case systems and voice alternations from
a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives.

- Parasession: Language Coexistence -

Invited Speaker:
Salikoko Mufwene - University of Chicago

Papers in this parasession will examine issues pertaining to the social
dimensions of language coexistence, both among speakers in social interactions
(micro and macro) and within individual speakers.

- Parasession: South Asian Linguistics -

Invited Speaker:
Veneeta Dayal - Rutgers University

This parasession invites submissions investigating phenomena occurring in the
languages of South Asia.  Contributions from a variety of subfields are welcome.

- Presentation Format -

Each talk will be given 30 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for
questions.  Presented papers will be published in the CLS Proceedings.

- Submission Guidelines -

Anyone may submit one abstract as the sole author and a second as co-author, or
two as co-author.  All abstracts should be e-mailed to cls_at_uchicago_dot_edu
with the following specifications:

- PDF (preferred) or Word format, with filename ''Lastname - Paper Title''
(e.g., Patel : On Halkomelem Morphophonemics.pdf)
- 12-point font, 1-inch margins
- Title and keywords (i.e., CLS session title, language, language family,
linguistics subfield)
- No more than 500 words in length (data, keywords, and references are not
included in the final count)
- Author name(s) should not appear on abstract

The body of the e-mail should include the following:

- author name(s) and affiliation(s)
- contact e-mail address
- paper title

Please note that abstracts submitted to CLS 42 will be evaluated under a new,
two-tiered review system involving both external and internal reviewers.

- Deadline -

All abstracts must be submitted by 8pm CST on November 21, 2005.  The authors
will be notified of acceptance decisions by mid-February 2006.
