Meeting Description:

The conference 'Interpreting for Relevance: Discourse and Translation' seeks to explore the phenomena of human communication and cognition from the perspective of relevance theory as well as related and competing approaches. 

The conference aims to provide a venue for linguists and other scholars to explore the phenomena of human communication and cognition from the perspective of relevance theory as well as related and competing approaches. We would also like to encourage those interested in translation studies and literary analysis to test and evaluate the efficiency of the theory of relevance with regard to those fields of studies. 

Papers are invited that range from purely theoretical linguistic and/or pragmatic studies to empirical applications in language, translation and literature.

We welcome submissions in the following areas:
- state-of-the-art developments, modifications and critiques of relevance theory
- practical applications of relevance theory (e.g. language learning/teaching, translation studies, literary theory)
- mental representations, concepts, the architecture of the mind
- meaning and communication
- ways of interpreting various types of discourse
- social aspects of communication and language use.

Talks will be organised around major topics, depending on the contents of the submissions. The format is 20 minutes for presentation + 10 minutes question time. Proposals for workshops, panel discussions and other sessions are welcome. Plenaries will take from 45 minutes to 1,5 hour including discussion.

We are pleased to inform you about the forthcoming 2nd International Workshop on Metaphor and Discourse at Jaume I University: ''Metaphor and Discourse: Where cognition and communication meet'', which is due take place at the Department of English Studies at Jaume I University (Castelló de la Plana, Spain). The workshop will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of February, 2006. Contributions are encouraged on all aspects of metaphor and metonymy studies, with special emphasis on the interrelation between two approaches, on the one hand, the well known cognitive theory of metaphor initiated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and similar approaches that deal with the role of conceptual mappings in thought, language and culture; and, on the other hand, the recently emergent trend that deals with metaphor and metonymy phenomena at the level of discourse and their role in text coherence, text development, and social interaction.

Our aim is to bring together specialists and researchers involved in these research matters in order to discuss recent and new contributions to the field, as well as to open new debates about the relevance of conceptual mappings in relation to thought, language, discourse and communication.

We invite abstracts for 20 minute presentations, plus 10 minutes discussion. Abstracts must not exceed 500 words (including references) and should be sent electronically in one of the common formats (preferably ASCII) to ignasi.navarro at fil.uji.es by December 20th 2005. Abstracts must be anonymous and accompanied by a separate form including the title, the authors' name and address (both electronic and post), as well as their affiliation. The languages of the workshop are English, Spanish and Catalan.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by January 1st, via e-mail.
The programme will be announced by January 10th .
