Subject: The Grad School Challenge
Who's leading in the Fund Drive Grad School Challenge?
As I write, the top ten schools, in order, are:
1. Stanford University
2. University of Arizona
3. University of Massachusetts at Amherst
4. University of Washington at Seattle
5. University of Wisconsin-Madison
6. University of California, Berkeley
7. Wayne State University
8. Cornell University
9. School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London
10. University of Pennsylvania
Stanford has been at the top for many days now. But in the Grad
School Challenge, things can change rapidly. Last year, Stanford and
U. of Arizona battled it out, with at least 4 upsets in the last week
of Fund Drive. Then U. of Arizona challenged MIT (West Coast against
East Coast, you understand); and all at once there was another school
in the running for first place. Stanford won, I believe, thanks in
great part to the efforts of several faculty members to awaken school
loyalty--and muster support for LINGUIST.
The year before, U. of Indiana won the challenge, thanks to the
organizational efforts of a graduate student and to the generosity of
the faculty, who vowed to match whatever the students collected.
The year before that, the challenge was won by U. of Massachusetts.
This was our first Grad School Challenge, and U Mass was the first
school to secure the fruits of victory: a feature on our homepage and
prominent mention on all our Fund Drive pages. This year, thanks to
generous subscribers and supporting publishers, there will be a prize
for every one of the top five schools. And this year, U Mass is again
a top contender, since two generous faculty members have agreed to
match the amount that the graduate students donate.
The Grad School Challenge is always fun for the LINGUIST crew, and
most of us check the standings page daily to see which universities
are ahead. But, from our point of view, there is a serious side to
the challenge as well. In terms of generating donations to support
our student crew, the Grad School Challenge is one of our most
effective Fund Drive activities. It appears that many universities
have students, faculty, and friends who are as loyal as they are
generous. They can display both traits by making a donation to the
LINGUIST Fund Drive and crediting it to their university in the Grad
School Challenge.
In so doing, of course, donors also contribute to the field of
linguistics: not only do they help to secure the future of LINGUIST
List, and with it the electronic infrastructure LL provides without
cost to the discipline, but also they fund the education of the
excellent graduate students who staff the LL operation. Through the
years, subscriber donations have funded almost 60 students through
their M.A. degrees. And most of these students have gone on to enter
Ph.D. programs in linguistics. You'll be hearing from some of these
"LL alums" in the Fund Drive letters, and we'll be featuring others on
our (Young) Linguist of the Day page. Please take this opportunity to
support the current crew by accessing:
http://linguistlist.org/donation/index.html
Be sure to credit your school in the Grad School Challenge!
And thanks again to all of you who help LINGUIST List continue.
-Helen

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $52,932. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.
Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.
For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
