Corpus Work on Argumentation
Panel being organized for the 10th International Pragmatics Conference 

Work on argumentation has often proceeded by examining single arguments, speeches or debates.  While these studies have been invaluable to provide an empirical base for argumentation theory, they have not always allowed us to conclude that the features of argumentation which happen to be prominent in the examples are typical of (an) argumentative practice more generally.  This panel at the upcoming IPrA conference therefore aims to extend such work by featuring studies that go beyond such single cases to examine corpora of argumentative discourse.  Work is invited which explores any aspect of the pragmatics of argumentation, conflict talk or reason-giving grounded in a large, diverse body of discourse.
