Linguistic Field(s): Semantics

Call Deadline: 05-Jan-2007

Meeting Description:

The fifth edition of the Conference on Semantics and Modelisation (JSM07).
The goal of the conference is to promote research on the formalisation of linguistic meaning and interpretation with the help of formal models.

Second call for papers

The GDR Sémantique et Modélisation (CNRS) and the UMR 7023 (CNRS &
University Paris 8) organize the fifth edition of the Conference on
Semantics and Modelisation (JSM07). The conference will be held in
Paris, on March 29-30, 2007. (The conference will be preceded by a 3
day school in formal semantics, on March 26-28, with courses given in
French.)

The goal of the conference is to promote research on the formalisation
of linguistic meaning and interpretation with the help of formal
models. In view of the development of corpus-based research in
semantics and related fields, proposals articulating the use of
corpora and representational problems in semantics and pragmatics are
particularly welcome.

Topics:

We invite abstracts that address any problem in the modelling of
linguistic meaning and interpretation. This includes but is not
limited to the following topics:

- syntax / semantics interface,
- logical formalization,
- tense and aspect,
- lexical meaning,
- functional words (determiners, pronouns, etc.),
- information structure,
- presuppositions and implicatures,
- speech acts,
- discourse relations in text and dialogue.

Submission Conditions:

Abstracts must be anonymous. They should be 2 pages long including
references, examples and figures. They should have a 1 inch margin on
all four sides and use at least a 11 points font. Files may be in
plain text, PDF, RTF or MS Word. Names and affiliations should be
indicated in the body of the message. Proposals should be sent at
jsm07{at}free.fr no later than January 5, 2007. Contact

janvier 2007. Pour tout renseignement, contacter jsm07{at}free.fr.

Call Deadline: 01-Feb-2007

Meeting Description:

10th Annual Ohio State University Symposium on
Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics
April 27-28, 2006
Keynote speaker in Literature: Chilean writer Diamela Eltit
Keynote speaker in Linguistics to be announced

The rearticulation of cultural differences in light of shifting borders and the questioning of material and symbolic limits have radically altered the subject and the social bond in contemporary societies. The individual's negotiation of pleasure in new cultural spaces has likewise been modified, perhaps echoing the reformulation of liberal post-state apparatuses of control.

We see linguistic phenomena as equivalently impacted by such recent cultural transformations. New configurations of physical and symbolic borders are also translated into new configurations of communication systems. We intend to explore and discuss, from a variety of subdisciplines, the following topics, among others: analysis of linguistic systems, linguistic change and variation, the effects of contact between languages and dialects, as well as the formation of pidgins and creoles.

On behalf of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Graduate Student Symposium Committee invites the submission of abstracts, panel proposals, and workshop proposals for its Symposium. Contributions may be in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, and can be situated within any subfield of the culture and literature, and linguistics areas.

Deadline for submissions of abstracts: February 1st, 2007
Notification of acceptance: Second week of March, 2007

The fee will be $25 for graduate students and $40 for faculty if paid by February 1.
The fee will be $35 for graduate students and $50 for faculty if paid after February 1.

Please submit the abstract/proposals to: symposium_sppo at osu.edu
For more information please visit our website:
http://sppo.osu.edu/newsOutreach/yr2006-07/symposium/default.cfm

Submission Policy:

Individual presentations should not be longer than 20 minutes in duration (that is 7-9 pages double-spaced). Abstracts and proposals must be at most one page long, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font. An optional second page is permitted for data and references. They may be submitted in .pdf, .ps, .doc, or .rtf attachments. Submissions are anonymous. The body of the e-mail should contain the following information: title of the paper, panel or workshop, area of specialization, name, postal address, e-mail, and affiliation of the author(s).

It is the purpose of this encounter to debate these issues from the perspectives of each participant's research agenda.

The symposium will consist of both panels and workshops.

Panels will be organized in three ways:

a)	The first modality will be panels in which two participants will present their work; then the presenters and one commentator will exchange their perspectives about the presentations.
b)	The second modality will consist of panels in which one presentation will be discussed by two commentators.
c)	The third modality will consist of panels with three presenters and one commentator who will discuss the works presented.

Workshops will function in the following way:

The workshops are opportunities to share research on and debate specific topics. Proposals for workshops should specify the topic or the issue to be presented and include a minimum of three and a maximum of six participants.

Some possible topics for panels and workshops in Literatures and Cultures:

1.	Cybercultures and the Construction of Subjectivity.
